Before you understand it

A memory with teeth

Driftline Effect is a work of Black speculative fiction centered on Xander Axton and Nia.

As contradictions begin accumulating within Xander’s reality, the novel explores memory, identity, grief, intimacy, family, and the interior lives of people attempting to remain connected while the familiar becomes increasingly difficult to trust.

At its core, the novel is an exploration of Black masculinity and interiority, grounded in ordinary Black life even as its psychological and speculative elements intensify.

Nia in a black coat on a Metro platform, looking back over her shoulder as a train waits beside her

Nia

Witness

Nia hears the fracture before anyone else admits it exists. She has no patience for convenient memories, especially Xander’s.

Kwame

Anchor

Kwame knows history is never silent; someone simply chooses what gets amplified. He may be the only one who can keep the signal from rewriting them all.

Words from another reality

At first, you assume you're mistaken. That becomes harder when you're the only one who remembers what happened. Xander quote: The outcome arrives before the truth does. Quote: That tastes like a divorced uncle trying to reconnect with jazz. — Nia Quote: The whole world is wasting time. I'm just doing it where I don't gotta hear nobody mouth. — Kwame
Portrait of author D.A. Davis

D.A. Davis

D.A. Davis is a writer shaped by Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. His work draws from music, literature, film, comics, philosophy, and lived experience, with influences ranging from James Baldwin and Stephen King to Jay-Z and Killer Mike.

Born from a thousand unfinished conversations about reality and the human condition, Driftline Effect brings together grief, memory, imagination, and the complexities of the world around us.

What began as a collection of seemingly unrelated influences eventually became something greater — a story about the nature of reality and our place within it.
